When you always pursue, you never have.

Did you know that when you pursue something you never end up having it? It’s because your energy is all about the pursuit, rather than the having.

How can you have without pursuing?

Frogs do not persue flies; they wait patiently until the right fly comes to them, and then they act decisively.

We need to be particularly careful with the language we use with ourselves. Because as we’ve already discussed, language shapes our perceptions and our language holds the energies of our intent, even if we have not articulated them directly. When Alexis de Tocqueville visited the United States more than a hundred years ago, he said “we have a misleading idea at the very head of our Constitution: the pursuit of happiness.” He added, “One cannot pursue happiness; if he does he obscures it” (Johnson, Robert. He: Understanding Masculine Psychology. © 1989. pg. 82).

Essentially, the more we pursue something, the more it eludes us. What you seek is always out of reach in your mind. In fact, the very pursuit, always keeps what we pursue out in front; like the rabbit in a greyhound track race, we perceive that we never obtain what we pursue.

Culturally, we’ve been conditioned to pursue. We pursue good grades, more money, great career, wonderful life, progress, etc. And what do we get? For some, not much. We need to make a concerted effort in our lives to change this conditioning of pursuit.

So what can you do instead? Focus on gratitude and your successes. One way to focus on gratitude is to give a moment each day in prayer for what you have. It can be as simple as that day’s meals, shelter, clothing, air, water, etc. It may seem contrived at first, but gets easier once you realize all you’ve got. Sometimes it’s easier to actually keep a written success journal. A success journal can be short phrases or statements answering the following statements:

  • Today’s successes …
  • I acknowledge/praise myself for …
  • Today I’m grateful for …
  • Today I celebrate …

Next, it’s helpful to have success steps that identify a process to achieve what you want. These steps help you to focus your energies after you’ve appreciated what you have. It helps you to grow your seeds to the fruit you want it to become.

You can’t change yourself by looking at the fruit that you’ve created and want to change the fruit (or result). Instead, you need to change the seeds you plant and how you grow those seeds and roots. Then you will automatically grow the fruit you want in your life.

So over this next moon cycle, consider where you pursue things in your life – or where you don’t have what you want. Then look at being grateful, appreciative, and begin to grow the seeds you really want in your life.

Next Month: Consistency is better than nothing when it comes to abundance.
